Dear Drs. Chad and Brenda,
I will be forever grateful that I found The Paleo Secret and started the 30 Day Challenge. My only wish is that I had known about this when I was in my 20s instead of at 61 years of age. My many years of abuse to my body resulted in an AM/PM drug container filled to the brim with medications to treat cardiac disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and arthritis.
I have made some amazing progress over the last couple of months. Prior to starting Paleo, I started Atkins again for the 3rd time in 20 years. My original goal was to lose weight and lower my A1C which was 7.6! After a month on Atkins, I happened to find The Paleo Secret and was totally engrossed by what I read, thinking to myself, “What do I have to lose?” So… I decided to make a committee to to myself to start a new way of LIVING! It is NOT a diet to me, it’s a new way of life.
The results of the last 30 days have been pretty dramatic! My extremely high A1C dropped from 7.6 to 6.2, with a fasting blood glucose reading now down from the high 150s to the 120s. It is far from where I’d like to see it, but I am hopeful that my body will reverse my insulin resistance and return to normal levels. My widespread arthritis and joint pain seems to be subsiding as I no longer feel like a cripple when I get out of bed in the morning, crawling to take my narcotic pain meds for relief. I’m still experiencing pain and stiffness but I’m improving every day.
I’m sleeping better than I ever have since I was in my teens. After being awake for 15 to 16 hours, a feeling of exhaustion overcomes me and I fall asleep immediately and stay asleep for 7-8 hours. It’s been many years since I’ve slept like this. Amazing! As a “side effect” of my new Paleo way of life, I’ve also lost 25 pounds between starting Atkins then switching to Paleo. As good as Atkins is for weight reduction, it doesn’t eliminate the poisons from the standard American diet, which increase the widespread inflammation leading to multiple health issues. I eat very well and get hungry at appropriate times, not finding a need to snack constantly.
I see my cardiologist next month and my PCP the month after. I’m hoping that they agree to reduce or eliminate some of my meds as long as I agree to continue what I have been doing and continue to monitor my vitals and blood glucose readings. My cardiologist may not want to stop Plavix because of my 4 cardiac stents, but on the other hand, may agree to eliminate it because of my use of turmeric every night. I definitely bleed easier as noted when I take my blood glucose readings.
I did not take any photos so I cannot attach them, but I can tell you that I’ve had to tighten my belt 3 extra notches and am getting to the point where I need to think about some new pants that fit. My kids made fun of me with my sagging, baggy pants, in a supportive way of course.
I have been spreading the word to friends and family about Paleo in general and The Paleo Secret and 30DC specifically.
Before I close, I want to ask your professional advice and guidance on an issue I’ve been having that none of my doctors can get a handle on. I perspire profusely with the slightest activity, including vacuuming the house and walking around taking photos for my job. With my job, I am working outside 3/4 of the time in extreme weather conditions, and find myself working in short sleeves only, when the temps are in the low 40s. The last few summers have been agonizing, having passed out from the heat several times. My body is not acting appropriately for the temps. Yes, when it’s hot I should sweat to cool my body, but I sweat all the time with minor activity and exertion. None of my doctors have any idea. My PCP offered to write a script for antiperspirant and I responded, what, and rub it all over my body? She laughed, but I failed to see the humor. My cardiologist and arthritis Doctor have no ideas or suggestions. In desperation, I sought out an endocrinologist, thinking one of my regulating hormones were out of whack. All tests came back within normal ranges, except testosterone, which was low. Well I’m in my 60s so that wasn’t a surprise. I am very desperate for answers. I need to work for several more years, but the extreme perspiration is an obstacle at this point. Can either of you suggest my next steps? I’m desperate for answers and will do whatever is necessary. By the way, I am not overly obese, weighing 186 at 5’10”.
Thank you so very much for an outstanding support mechanism. I look forward to your continued emails and input on the Paleo Secret Facebook site. I am very grateful to both of you and Andi Petty. God bless you both!
