The Paleo Secret 30 Day Challenge

August 20th, 2012
The Paleo Secret 30 day challenge Chris Clark

(This is Chris…he changed his diet for 30 days, lost 6.4 lbs, and 5.7% body fat.  He changed nothing with his exercise routine during this time and simply ate according to a whole food paleo type template)

Interested in losing weight, improving health or bettering your performance?  Is your energy low, having digestive issues, or skin problems?  Looking to reverse type II diabetes, decrease your chances of having heart disease, cancer or Alzheimer’s?  Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Or do you just generally want to optimize your health and sense of well being?  Then you have come to the right place!

The Paleo Secret invites you, your family, friends and co-workers to take part in a 30-day challenge beginning on the 1st of new year!  We are looking for people who are committed to bettering their health and changing their lives.  Take time to familiarize yourself with this way of eating in the next couple weeks.  Clean out your fridge and your pantry.  Find out where you can get quality foods (stores and farmer’s markets).

We are also asking for people to take before and after pictures.  You can take it a step further and record your pre and post weight,  body fat measurements and/or do blood panels to chart progress.  We want you to tell us about your experience and your stories.  Please submit them to  We want to post these results on our blog with your permission to continue to inspire people.  This stuff works…now you just have to do it!

Here’s the deal…

For 30 days straight eat quality meat, vegetables, a little nuts & seeds, a little fruit, and consume healthy fats while avoiding sugar, grains, legumes and dairy.  Try to eat a quality protein and fat at every meal.  Get rid of all processed and refined foods and get back to the basics.  Drink lots of water and do a little movement.  Be sure to keep stress levels low, sleep well and get some sun.  For more detailed and guided information GO HERE.  It’s so simple but SO effective!

Why does this work so well?

You will be maximizing nutrition and minimizing toxicity so you will dramatically reduce inflammation in your body.  Inflammation plays a part in all diseases from obesity, to cancer, heart disease, arthritis and so on.  From a dietary perspective, it comes largely from poor quality foods with lots of chemicals, preservatives, toxic oils, and sugar.  These are foods we’ve been conditioned to eat and refer to as “food”…. but it’s not food, it’s poison and it’s been weighing (no pun intended) you down!  You won’t be touching any of that stuff!

You will be consuming significantly less sugar than you would be with a Standard American Diet since you are taking out sodas, juices, grains, artificial sweeteners, and foods labeled as “low fat” and “heart healthy” that just have loads of sugar.  In doing so, you will have much more stable blood sugar levels.  Your body will transition from getting its energy from sugar to getting its energy from fat meaning you will become a fat burner as opposed to a sugar burner.  This is where people start to see amazing results.

You will no longer be eating foods that are gut irritants such as processed & refined foods, grains, legumes and conventional dairy.  This will allow you to better be able to breakdown and properly absorb food so your body gets all the nutrients and vitamins it needs and was designed for.  Your gut will also begin repair itself from the damage it’s taken from (for most people) a lifetime of processed and refined foods it was never intended for.  This allows the gut barrier to better be able to tell what needs to pass through the intestinal lining and into the blood stream (vital nutrients and building blocks) and what is not needed and will be discarded as waste.  Gut health is the key to building a strong immune system!

What about whole, unprocessed grains like amaranth, spelt, farro, etc? I’ve heard that they were harvested wild before the agricultural revolution. Does that mean they are okay in small amounts, or not at all?

    • Hey Karin…we ask that you take out all grains as they can be very problematic for most everyone. The get broken down as glucose extremely rapidly in the bloodstream and also have a significant gut irritating potential. After 30 days you can reintroduce these foods and see what effect it has on your body. For more detailed info on grains please see our resource section and look for the video by Dr. William Davis. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Great stuff. I’ve never in my life tried to follow a diet. But about 9 months ago I had a toothache. It hurt, and since I already knew that grains are pro-inflammatory, I cut out all grains while recovering. I suddenly dropped about 20 lbs, and the transition to this lifestyle of eating was extremely easy. I still have grains once in a while, it’s more of a condiment rather than a substantial part of the plate, and even that is really rare.

The more I learn of wheat’s effects on the brain and genetic expression, the easier it is for me to avoid it.

18 years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes. I was 32. When the blood test came back I had an A1C reading of 10.2. Huge as it was, my bigger problem was my triglycerides. They were over 3200! I went on a similar diet (removal of bread, rice, pasta, corn and all sodas) at my doctor’s recommendation. After 60 days I had lost 55 pounds and my readings were almost normal. I stayed on this “diet” for about a year and lost a remarkable 225 lbs! I’ve maintained my weight for 18 years and cheat every now and then. I love this way of eating and would rather be healthy and fit than eat the sweets but well…. holidays! They’re not that big a deal anymore as I always revert to this lifestyle/diet if and when I do “cheat”. The few pounds I do put on come right off. Love it. Wished I had known about this sooner as I was a huge carb eater. Glad someone is getting the word out. People this is NOT a gimmick. It really works!

I recently found out I have developed allergies to wheat, egg whites, dairy, peanuts, soy, shrimp, scallops, and walnuts. Although the reactions I have to them are intestinal, I still feel the mental strain of fatigue and being over weight as well as the physical beating they do on my intestines, joints, and extremely frequent headaches. My cousin is an avid marathon runner who I went to first when I found out about my allergies and suggested I follow the paleo plan since he does and has reaped the benefits himself. I hope this challenge helps me to finally get on track with my food choices while giving my husband a reason to join in as well as support and a little extra motivation to stay on track.

I have been eating a paleo diet for a few weeks now, which is a huge change going from a competitiors diet..lots of grains! I like the way i feel and want to try the 30 day challenge..will i lose muscle, I am already decently fit but would like to tighten up but dont want muscle loss!

    • chad.walding says:

      Hey Julie…

You’ll you need make sure you’re eating enough protein to not lose muscle mass. Eat somewhere between .75g/1g of animal based protein per lb/bw. See how you feel there. There is no one size fits all. Listen to your body…it will tell you how much protein you need. Ensure that you chew your food well as this effects digestion and absorption. Also…if you’re very active and lean then you’ll need to includes lots of starchy carbs like sweet and white potatoes (yes…there fine), acorn squash, butternut squash, etc…I feel white rice is fine also as long as you have no digestive issues with them…just stay aware. Always include these carbs in a post workout meal anywhere from 45 min – 60 min after your workout. This will help you recover faster and better. Last…make sure you’re drinking lots of water…around half an oz per lb/bw. Don’t drink much around your meals as this dilutes the acid needed to break down your food. Sleep well and keep stress levels low…that’s the ticket!

Hi, this is my 5th day on this and i have low energy, and muscle are sore, and bad breath, i’m i doing something wrong?

    • brenda.walding says:

      Hey Carol,
No…this is likely a sign that you are detoxing. When you start eating cleaner foods your body begins cleansing toxins. It’s not uncommon to feel this way in the first week or so. Keep it up and be sure to drink plenty of water away from your meals. Best!
